The double white sleeve stripes with black outlines were replaced with white-gray-white stripes, matching those on the maroon pants that were introduced in 2016. The collar color was also changed from black-white-black to solid white. Curiously, the black outline was not removed from the numbers.

The upgrades made to the Bulldogs' maroon jerseys gave them a clean, cohesive home uniform for the first time since 2013, and their best since at least the mid 90s. The maroon jerseys were worn 6 times in 2017, with an even split of 3 times with white pants and 3 times with gray pants.

Photo by Jim Lytle, AP Photo

Veterans Day Alternate Uniform:
For the second year in a row, Adidas gave Mississippi State an American Flag themed alternate uniform for Veterans Day. The 2017 version, which kept the flag design constrained to the numbers and stripes, didn't have a huge pants logo, and was worn with the regular silver helmet, still had some flaws, but was much, much better than the 2016 black version worn against Texas A&M.

Photo by Rogelio V. Replacing the "Primeknit" template that debuted in 2015, the "A1" template ditches the egregious primeknit pattern that adorned the sides of the pants and almost all of the jersey on the previous template. A much more subtle diagonal line pattern is present on the front; while still visible, the new pattern is much less distracting than the Primeknit pattern was. Another noticeable change is that the seam across the shoulder blade has been eliminated, leaving the shoulder cap as the only major seam on the jersey. Overall, the "A1" template appears to be a solid upgrade over Adidas's previous templates.

Pictures of the Primeknit A1 template in action at the Army All-American Bowl

It will be interesting to see if Mississippi State makes the change to the "A1" template in 2018. When the "Primeknit" template was released in 2015, the Bulldogs were one of the first teams to switch to it, so it stands to reason that they will also be one of the first teams to wear the "A1" template. With this in mind, I went ahead and put together a quick (incomplete) mockup of the "A1" template to show what it might look like if the Bulldogs were to upgrade for the 2018 season:

Joe Moorhead Effect:
It's not uncommon for a coaching change to have an impact on a team's uniforms. Especially back in the day in college football, the head coach often had the primary role in ordering and deciding on uniforms. In more modern times, its often more of an athletic department thing, but the head coach most definitely still has an influence. Look no further than P.J. Fleck at Western Michigan and now Minnesota as proof.

It'll be interesting to see what impact, if any, new Bulldog Head Coach Joe Moorhead has on the uniforms. Penn State, where Moorhead was the offensive coordinator for the last two seasons, of course has the most conservative uniforms in college football. At Moorhead's last head coaching job, the Fordham Rams wore relatively generic uniforms, pretty par for the course for an FCS school, with the exception of these American-flag themed alternates that were worn in Moorhead's final season at Fordham in 2015.

A couple of interesting things about Fordham's uniforms during Moorhead's tenure were the use of helmet stickers and the lack of names on the back of the jerseys. The helmet sticker thing is something that has the biggest chance of carrying over to Mississippi State; usually that's a coach's preference. It would definitely be different to see dog bones or something similar used as reward stickers on players' helmets here.

On the nameplates, someone mentioned to me on Twitter the other day that they wouldn't be surprised to see State remove the player names on the back of the jerseys next season, based on the fact that neither Penn State nor Fordham wore them under Moorhead's tenure. That may well be the case, but I don't buy it for the time being. Aside from 2012-2014, Penn State has never worn names on the back of their jerseys; Fordham didn't wear names before Moorhead arrived, and they haven't since either. I think that has more to do with them being a smaller school ordering generic uniforms than it does a preference on the coach's part. But if the names were to be removed in 2018, State would have to order new jerseys with higher numbers; Adidas jerseys look pretty bad with blank nameplates on them because the numbers are so low. This probably wouldn't be a problem if we update to the "A1" template anyway.

What Changes are Needed:
State's uniforms were pretty darn good in 2017; all of the major problems from the 2015 set have gradually been fixed, and State looks much better for it. All that's left are a few minor nitpicks, all of which would easily be fixed with a template upgrade, and really aren't a big deal at all if they aren't fixed.

Some consistency with the alternates:

Both of State's alternates this season followed the 15-16 double striping pattern instead of the 2017 one. Hopefully in 2018, any alternate uniforms are more consistent with the rest of the set. In particular, the oversized pants logo never needs to see the light of the day again. I'd prefer they put stripes on all pants, but if they insist on not doing so for alternates, the small hip logo that was on the Veterans Day pants is the way to go.

Remove the black number outlines on the maroon jerseys:

I was pretty surprised that the black outlines were not removed from the numbers on the maroon jersey when the black on the collar and sleeves was. An upgrade to the "A1" template would be the perfect opportunity to completely rid State's regular uniforms of black.

Move the pants logo on the gray pants to make them consistent with the white and maroon pants:

I think this one has a pretty good chance of happening in 2018. The gray pants, arguably the Bulldogs' best, are three seasons old now, and are probably due for replacement. An upgrade to the "A1" template would be a good time to bring the gray pants in line with their maroon and white counterparts.

Make the pants stripes a bit thinner:

Along those same lines, one can't help but notice that the stripes on the white, maroon, and gray pants are excessively wide. I haven't really complained, because the stripes are a tremendous upgrade from the oversized logo worn in 2014 and 15, but it wouldn't hurt to thin the stripes up a little bit if an upgrade to "A1" is made.

Bring back the matte maroon helmets:

My personal favorite Mississippi State football helmets of all time are the various matte maroon helmet designs worn from 2011 through 2015. They were essentially replaced in 2016 by the silver helmets; the silver helmets are cool too, and I'm content if they stick around for another year or two. However, the matte maroon helmets always look so good, especially on the road, and I would welcome them back with open arms. Alternatively, if the silver helmets are only going to be worn with alternates, you could replace them with matte or shiny black helmets to create a true all-black look, which would look the best if we really have to do the black alternates.

Move the Adidas logo away from the center of the jersey?:

From 2009 through 2014, the Adidas logo was on the right chest of the Bulldogs' jerseys. However, starting with the 2013 Egg Bowl, and then again with the DWS 100 uniforms in 2014, and full time starting in 2015, the Adidas logo was moved to the middle of the chest, directly above the "Mississippi State" banner wordmark. It works great for bowl games by providing plenty of space for the bowl patches, but the rest of the time, the middle appears too cluttered up while the right chest is completely empty.

One thing you might notice about the "A1" template is that the collar doesn't actually extend all of the way down; there's mesh around the top of the middle chest area, so there is actually more space for a logo to go there, potentially negating the clutter problem mentioned above. However: if you'll notice, both of the Army All-American game uniforms have the Adidas logo on the left chest. In addition, all of the Adidas college baseball uniforms that have been revealed so far in 2018 feature the Adidas logo on the left chest (even though it looks worse on State's maroon MS jersey, stacked on top of the M over S). Based on that, when State upgrades to the "A1" template, I would not be at all surprised to see the Adidas logo on the left chest and the SEC patch moved to the right chest.

That does it for the 2017 Mississippi State Football Uniform Recap. It was a great season, one of the Bulldogs' best ever uniform wise. Interestingly, different color pants were worn in each of the three games (Gray in 2015 Belk, Maroon in 2016 St. Pete, and White in 2017 TaxSlayer).

Saturday was the Bulldogs' third time wearing the Maroon-Maroon-White combination this season; it joined the Maroon-Maroon-Gray combination as the most worn combination of 2017. With the updated maroon jerseys, the classic look is as good as it has ever been and is among the Bulldogs' best. It was previously worn in wins over Charleston Southern and Kentucky; the win over Louisville made it the Bulldogs' winningest 2017 combination with a 3-0 record.

Louisville went with chrome red helmets, white jerseys, and white pants to complete an all around solid all-Adidas uni matchup. The Cardinals' chrome red helmets look really good; they're one of my favorite college football uniform elements, and I was excited to see them worn against State. By my count, it was the 10th above average uniform matchup involving the Bulldogs this season; exceptions were the games vs Texas A&M, UMass, and Alabama.

The two uniform models for this game are #41 Mark McLaurin and #10 Keytaon Thompson. McLaurin had not one, not two, but THREE interceptions of 2016 Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson, one of which ended a potential game-winning drive for the Cardinals with 2 and a half minutes left in the game. McLaurin, along with rest of the Bulldog defense under interim DC Ron English did an excellent job all day of containing Jackson and giving the Bulldogs a chance to win the game. Thompson, a true freshman, is the Bulldogs' starting quarterback after Nick Fitzgerald's season-ending ankle injury in the Egg Bowl. Thompson led the Bulldogs to victory by completing 11 of 20 passing and scoring three touchdowns on the ground.

I want to finish this column with a shoutout to Mississippi State's all-time winningest head coach by winning percentage, Greg Knox, who will finish with a 1-0 record (1.000) as head coach of the Bulldogs. Many, myself included, wrote off this bowl game after Fitzgerald's injury and Mullen's departure, but Knox and co. held everything together, managing to win a bowl game and beat a Heisman Trophy winner in the process. So about the only thing that we can take solace in right now is the fact that this was, without a doubt, the best Egg Bowl uniform matchup in a long time, perhaps this century, and perhaps ever.

It was the third straight Egg Bowl, and the second straight in Starkville, that the Bulldogs didn't wear gold-accented alternates. Which is absolutely a good thing; the gold alternates were a great idea for when they came out, and we never did lose in them at home. However, after we lost twice in the gold on the road and were starting to reach that next step as a program, it was absolutely the right decision to cut it out. If you are superstitious, however, you might it them to come back in 2019; State was 2-0 in gold accents at home but is 0-2 in the two since the gold was eliminated.

Thursday was the first time that State had ever worn Maroon/Maroon/Gray in the Egg Bowl; they previously wore gray/silver pants on the road in 1986 and 1988, but wore white pants at home in 1987. It was the first time State had worn maroon helmets and jerseys with contrasting pants in an Egg Bowl since 2001, which is still the last time State wore traditional Maroon/Maroon/White in the matchup. Maybe we can re-enact the uni matchup in 2019, but with a better result.

The uni model for the 2017 Egg Bowl in #94 Jeffrey Simmons, who blocked a punt early in the second quarter and then recovered a fumble later in the quarter.

Bulldogs Win at Arkansas in All White

https://www.hailstateunis.com/2017-football-season/bulldogs-win-at-arkansas-in-all-white

https://www.hailstateunis.com/2017-football-season/bulldogs-win-at-arkansas-in-all-white#comments

Uncategorized

Helmet: WhiteJersey: WhitePants: White For the second consecutive season, Mississippi State went with their clean All-White look for the last road game of the year. Today was their first win against the Hogs in the combo. In fact, teams wearing non-maroon/red helmets have not fared well at all in the MSU/Arkansas matchup; aside from maroon, Mississippi State worn white helmets (01,04-08,17) and silver helmets (16) in the matchup, while Arkansas has worn white (14) and anthracite (13) aside from red. State's wins in 2008 and 2017 are the only times the winner of the matchup has not been wearing either maroon or red helmets.

Coming into the week, I was hoping to see the Maroon/White/Gray combination for the first time since the Bulldogs traveled to Arkansas in 2015. However, I really can't complain about the all white look when it looks as good as it does. Plus, like last year, it worked for a win in the last road game of the year. This was probably the last time that State will wear the white jerseys this season; the SEC team will be the home team in the Bulldogs' two most likely bowl destinations (Citrus in Orlando and Outback in Tampa), so it looks like we'll have to wait until next year to see that Maroon/White/Gray look again.

After the participating in great uniform matchups each of the first 7 games of the season, State's last three weeks have featured sub-par uniforms from one of the teams involved (A&M against State, State against UMass, and State against Alabama). This week, with the Razorbacks in their standard Red-Red-White and the Bulldogs in their incredibly clean all White look, was without a doubt another great uni matchup.

The uniform model for today's win is DB #38 Johnathan Abram, who, along with Montez Sweat, Jeffrey Simmons, and the rest of the Bulldog defense, kept the Razorback offense in check all game aside from a few fluke plays. Abram recorded five tackles and forced a fumble late in the third quarter.

Mississippi State Wears Veterans Day Alternates Against Alabama

https://www.hailstateunis.com/2017-football-season/mississippi-state-to-wear-veterans-day-alternates-against-alabama

https://www.hailstateunis.com/2017-football-season/mississippi-state-to-wear-veterans-day-alternates-against-alabama#comments

Uncategorized

Helmet: SilverJersey: Maroon (Veterans Day)Pants: Maroon (Veterans Day)We’ve done much worse, but we can do better. It marks the second year in a row that the Bulldogs have worn Adidas-designed Veterans Day uniforms, as well as the second week in a row that the Bulldogs will wear an alternate uniform. Compared to last year, when the stars and stripes were plastered all over the shoulders, this year's design is downright tasteful. From afar, these just look like maroon and silver alternates. I give credit to Adidas here for kind of finding a medium that doesn't look awful.

There is no oversized M-State pants logo! When the replica jerseys leaked last week, one of my concerns was that that it would give the huge logo, which was worn on last year's military appreciation uniforms (and on last week's black pants), a chance to return. Instead, there is a larger than normal, but still relatively small, logo on the left hip, similar to the one Texas A&M wore a couple weeks ago (that's actually the only design element these share with A&M's alternates. More on that later.) This bodes well for future alternates; I'd prefer we use matching stripes on all pants designs, but if we have to do something different, this placement is a pretty good option. Hopefully last week's game vs UMass was the last time the huge pants logo ever sees the field.

The Adidas logo is back on the right chest instead of under the collar for the first time since 2014! After having the chest so cluttered up for so long, it looks odd having it spread out like it should be. The next time we update to a newer Adidas template, I wouldn't mind seeing the Adidas logo moved to this position on the regular uniforms.

The silver helmets fit this uniform perfectly; State had originally planned to wear decals with stars and stripes on them for this game, but the stars and stripes were very poorly implemented on the design, as I lamented in the original version of this post. Thankfully, the Bulldogs ended up wearing the regular decals instead, vastly improving the overall look of the uniform and creating at least some consistency with the other uniforms worn this season.

My major gripe with these uniforms is that they clearly follow the 2015-16 maroon jersey template, not the updated 2017 template. Rather than being maroon or silver, the collar is black-white-black, the same as the one on the 2015-2016 maroon jerseys. There are black outlines on the sleeve stripes, also reminiscent of the 2015-16 maroon jerseys, but they're barley visible against the shiny material of the stripes. This seems like more of a nitpick than anything, but it's something that Adidas should pay attention to and be consistent with.

Probably the most common criticism of these on social media was that they are "Texas A&M leftovers," or something to that effect. This claim is mostly based on the fact that the primeknit pattern really stands out on the reveal video and promo shots, similar to how it did on A&M's alternates a couple of weeks ago. During the game, however, the primenkit pattern was no more noticeable than it is on State's other jerseys. So, other than the hip logo location as mentioned above, and the fact that they both feature maroon jerseys and pants, these don't actually share any design elements with A&M's alternates, which didn't have sleeve stripes or a stars and stripes pattern.

Probably the biggest debate about these are whether or not they should even exist. Pretty much everyone agrees that honoring veterans is a great thing to do, and I'm proud of Mississippi State for doing it. The question at hand is whether gaudy alternate uniforms are the way to do it. This question has actually sparked a rather hot debate on social media, and it's a debate that I'm not going to delve into since it can get political very quickly. The one thing that I will say is that if you are going to honor veterans in this way, then the design should be held to the highest standard and the attention to detail should be a bit higher than it was with these.

Another thing that I don't love about these is that they make for two weeks in a row that State will be wearing alternate uniforms at home. If they do gold-accented Egg Bowl uniforms again this year, which is very possible, then the Kentucky game on October 21 could have potentially been the last time we see the regular maroon jerseys this season, which is crazy, especially when the regular maroon jerseys look as good as they do this year. Of course, the reason that Saturday is Military Appreciation Day is because Saturday is also Veterans Day. Last season, the Bulldogs played on the road on Veterans Day, so the black uniforms and Military Appreciation uniforms were combined into one, which resulted in what is probably the worst Mississippi State football uniform ever. That being said, if you replaced all of the maroon in this year's Military Appreciation uniforms with black, they would be magnitudes better than last year's.

The last time State beat Bama?

Maroon jersey.
Maroon pants.
Not a maroon helmet.

I see what you’re doing, @adidasFballUS. #HailState pic.twitter.com/SuUurv6suF
— HailStateUnis (@hailstateunis) November 7, 2017

Another problem with the timing of these is that it somewhat ruins what would have been a great uni matchup with Alabama. Additionally, with it being against the #2 team in the country, this is probably the most national exposure State will get all year, and we'll barely even look like ourselves. But again, there's not anything you can do about the timing if the whole point is to wear the uniforms on Veterans Day.

One positive thing about wearing this combination against Alabama is that it is similar to the combination State wore in its last win over Alabama, 10 years ago in 2007. The minor inconsistencies were hardly noticeable, and the decision to go with the regular decals on the silver helmets solidified these as one of our better alternates. After picking up big SEC Wins in the 2015 and 2016 "blackouts", the Bulldogs had a winning record in black and it appeared that the stigma of "we always play bad in black" was quickly becoming outdated. However, when the Bulldogs trailed UMass by a touchdown at halftime today, the correlation between black uniforms and poor play seemed as relavalent as ever. Of course, the Bulldogs did come back to outscore UMass 21-3 in the second half and win the game 34-23; they're the #16 team in the country for a reason. Still, today joins the 2011 LA Tech game as one where State won, but struggled, against a non-Power 5 opponent while wearing black.

It was actually a similar game to last year's against UMass in Foxborough, when the Bulldogs wore Patriots-themed alternates, trailed at halftime, but ended up winning by 12. In both of their games against UMass, State has worn alternate uniforms with silver helmets; maybe we'll see a traditional matchup in 2020, but I wouldn't count on it. Honestly, UMass is a good team to wear alternates against; we've had some great uniform matchups with the "traditional" SEC schools this year, and I'd like to keep that up.

Back to State's history in black uniforms, today was the sixth time that State has worn black jerseys, and the sixth different combination they've worn with them. The 2009-2011 black jerseys had maroon numbers and matched the template of the maroon and white jerseys from that period; they were worn with shiny maroon helmets each time, and with white, black, and maroon pants once each. The jerseys worn in 2015 and again today, the best of the bunch by far, feature silver numbers and match the template of the 2015 maroon and white jerseys; the pants, featuring a silver oversized M-State logo, are by far the worst part of the look. In 2015, the uniform was worn with matte maroon helmets; this year it was worn with silver helmets. The 2016 uniforms were the worst State has ever worn, in my opinion. Featuring a templated Adidas flag graphic on the shoulders and the M-State logo on the pants, they should had never seen the field. Thanks, Scott Stricklin (and have fun with your Gator-skin alternates, Florida.)

As far as on the field results go, the first two times State wore black were against Alabama and LSU. In 2009 and 2010, those were of course losses. The last four times, State has won in black. As mentioned above, they played sloppily but beat LA Tech in 2011 and UMass today. In 2015 and 2016, they played really well in black and beat Kentucky and #4 Texas A&M, respectively. Overall, the Bulldogs now have a 4-2 (2-2 SEC) record in black jerseys.

This year's blackout uniform is up there with 2015 as the Bulldogs' best ever. After seeing both on the field, I still can't decide if I like the silver or matte maroon helmet better with this uniform; the silver helmet goes really well with the shiny silver numbers, but the matte maroon matches the stripes and is just a better helmet in general. The worst part of the look, by far, is the oversized pants logo, which made its first appearance today since last year's blackout game. As I shared on Twitter Thursday night, there are a few modifications that State could make to elevate this from a decent to a great alternate look.

The uni model for today's game is #18 Deddrick Thomas, who returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown late in the 4th quarter to seal the win for the Bulldogs.

Bulldogs Win Big at Texas A&M in Maroon and White

https://www.hailstateunis.com/2017-football-season/bulldogs-win-big-at-texas-am-in-maroon-and-white

https://www.hailstateunis.com/2017-football-season/bulldogs-win-big-at-texas-am-in-maroon-and-white#comments

Uncategorized

Helmet: MaroonJersey: WhitePants: White Maybe we should wear school colors against A&M more often? The lengths at which Mississippi State and Texas A&M have gone to avoid a scrimmage-looking matchup has become sort of a running joke over the past few years. No matter the sport, it seems like in over half of the matchups between the Aggies and the Bulldogs, one of the teams will wear an alternate uniform. The two SEC West Maroon and White Adidas schools have only worn regular uniforms against each other in football twice (2013 and 2015, both times in College Station) since the Aggies joined the SEC in 2012. Even in their most recent non-SEC meeting, the 2000 Independence or "Snow" Bowl, the Aggies wore all-maroon and the Bulldogs wore white helmets for the first time since 1972.

To the surprise of few, this year was no different; while Mississippi State wore regular maroon helmets, white jerseys, and white pants (the same combo worn earlier in the season at LA Tech), the Aggies wore alternate all-maroon uniforms with chrome and black accents. The helmet was pretty cool, but the black primeknit pattern was really out of place on the jersey and pants. Overall, it was far from the worst alternate worn in the series (State's black uniforms last year and A&M's 2014 "icy" uniforms were worse), but that's more of an indication of how low the bar has been set than anything else.

So while it was probably the worst uniform matchup State has been a part of this season, it was actually in the top 50% of State-A&M matchups. State's Maroon-White-White look still looks great (and I think it would look even better with matte helmets), and the all maroon from A&M would've been decent if not for the black primeknit pattern. With the win, the Bulldogs evened up their SEC matchup record with A&M at 3-3, and took a 4-3 in the series this century (accounting for the Snow Bowl).

In the SEC games between State and A&M, teams wearing alternate uniforms (not considering the DWS 100 uniforms in 2014) are now 2-3, while teams wearing school colors are 4-3. Interesting correlation: if both teams are wearing alternates or both are in school colors (2012,2013,2015), A&M wins. If one team is in an alternate and the other is in school colors (2014,2016,2017), State wins.

This week's uni model is QB #7 Nick Fitzgerald, who ran all over Texas A&M for the second straight season. The matte blue helmet really pops along with the rest of the uniform; it's a much better look than the chrome decals and facemask that were worn on a shiny blue helmet in Starkville two years ago.

This was the most traditional that the Mississippi State vs Kentucky matchup, which has had an inconsistent uniform history, has looked since 2010, and the best that it has ever looked, in my opinion. The last 6 seasons, Kentucky had worn black uniforms (11,12), chrome helmets (14,16), and anthracite uniforms (16) against State. In that span, the Bulldogs had worn matte helmets each of those six years (11-16), including the oversized Bulldog helmets in 2013, and along with black uniforms in 2015. The traditional matchup this year was a breath of fresh air, especially now that both teams have really solid uniform sets. It was the seventh above average uniform matchup of the season involving the Bulldogs in as many games; their first below average matchup of 2017 will probably come next week at Texas A&M.

This week's uni model is defensive end #9 Montez Sweat, who was a big reason why the Bulldog defense held to 7 points a Kentucky team that they allowed 40 to a year ago. Sweat accumulated 7 tackles (2.5 for loss), 1.5 sacks, and a QB hurry.

Back at home, Bulldogs best BYU in Maroon-Maroon-Gray

https://www.hailstateunis.com/2017-football-season/back-at-home-bulldogs-best-byu-in-maroon-maroon-gray

https://www.hailstateunis.com/2017-football-season/back-at-home-bulldogs-best-byu-in-maroon-maroon-gray#comments

Uncategorized

Helmet: MaroonJersey: MaroonPants: Gray In a 35-10 win over BYU, Mississippi State repeated a uniform combo for the first time in the 2017 season. Of course a royal blue based look would be even better, but the navy looks solid also. The solid combination was first worn last season at Alabama, a game that had a very similar outcome.

Saturday was the 9th time that State had worn the Maroon-White-Maroon combo at Auburn- it's a popular choice against the Tigers due to the symmetry with Auburn's never-changing White-Navy-White home combination. The Bulldogs previously wore M-W-M on the Plains in 1985, 1993, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2003, 2009, and 2011. It's worth noting that only one of those (1997) was a win. Conversely, State has won at Auburn 4 times in white pants in that span (1985 to 2017).

Uni model for this game is the same as the Georgia game: kicker Jace Christmann, who made another field goal, as well as an extra point, to improve to 5/5 on FGs and 9/9 on PATs this season.
