It’s always disappointing to take a step backwards. That’s exactly what the Bulldogs are doing with their football uniforms on Saturday, wearing a templated Adidas design that distorts the American flag and brings back the oversized M-State logo to the pants.
Let me preface this by saying that it is hard to criticize anything that honors veterans; they deserve any and every respectful form of honor. However, a mess of a football uniform is not the way to do it. Ceremonies, moments of silence, cheers, etc... on the other hand, are great and should be happening around Veteran’s Day. But unless you’re Army, Navy, or Air Force, uniforms are not the way to do it. A flag patch or something similarly subtle works perfectly. Plastering a disarrayed flag over the shoulders does not.

Beyond that, here’s an outline of the four big reasons I dislike this Saturday’s uniforms:
1. The 2015 Black Jersey was much better; there was no reason to not simply wear it again.
2. It’s a templated design by Adidas, not unique to Mississippi State.

Like last year’s black jersey, the jersey is black with mainly silver accents. Which goes great with the silver helmet- the best part about the uniform. I am pleased that they went with the silver helmet. I was hoping they’d go with either Silver-Black-Gray or Silver-Black-Black, ideally with stripes on the black pants, and with the black jersey from last year. Speaking of which, the Black jersey from last year was actually solid. Perhaps that’s what is so disappointing with the templated design. We ditched something solid for the same exact uniform as Louisville.
The jersey, or pants for that matter, feature zero maroon aside from the SEC patch. It’s almost as if they were designed for another team, like Louisville. Oh wait. As you can see, there’s the double stripe design embedded on the sleeve caps and a stars and stripes design on the entire shoulder. As far as flag graphics go, I’m not a fan of distorting it like that. It’s more respectful to the flag to keep it intact and in its original colors.
But you know, I’m relatively okay with the jersey in comparison to the pants. The pants have the oversized M-State logo. We were done with it. DONE. But there it is. Still living in 2016. No reason whatsoever. Thanks, Adidas.

Something like Silver Helmet/ 2015 Black Jersey/ Black Pants with stripes would have looked much better and would have just as much as a cool factor with players and fans. Throw in an American flag patch and you’re set.

So how do these alternates shape the uniform season for the Bulldogs? These are the second alternate uniforms of the season, the first being the Patriots-inspired uniforms worn at UMass. Both uniforms used the same silver helmet- which at least provides some consistently between uniforms. The two alternates have increased the jersey total of the season to 4 and the pants total up to 5. Though the silver helmet connects them, the two alternate uniforms put a bit of a dent in what has otherwise been the most consistent uniform season for the Bulldogs in a while.
The uniforms will be worn for Saturday’s home game vs Texas A&M, which is slated for an 11 A.M. kickoff. This is the third matchup between the two teams in Starkville that will feature alternate uniforms; that’s every matchup in Starkville with both teams as members of the SEC. In 2012, the Bulldogs wore Snow Bowl alts and the Aggies wore Black. In 2014, the Bulldogs wore the DWS 100s and the Aggies wore Icy White alts. It is yet to be seen what the Aggies will wear, but it is worth noting that they do have American flag helmet decals. If they don’t go with alternates, the most likely combos for the Aggies are White/White/White and Maroon/White/Maroon.
