I'll take credit for this one. Last off-season, after the series with UMass, including a 2016 trip to Gillette Stadium, was announced, I had an idea for a concept: What if State wore Patriots-inspired uniforms on their 2016 trip? I based the concept off of the Patriots' throwback uniforms, changing the red and blue to maroon and gray:
I thought it was an interesting idea, but it was promptly archived and forgotten about. College to pro and vice versa concepts are not uncommon on the sportslogos.net concept boards, but never had a team actually done something like this. On Monday morning, Mississippi State revealed that they had taken my idea, based it on the Patriots' current road uniforms instead, and actually did it. For this special occasion, I'm all for it. First, I do think it's pretty cool that my concept might have inspired a real uniform. Secondly, like previous uniform reveals, this announcement got people taking about Mississippi State when they otherwise wouldn't be. Any publicity is good publicity, right? |
Aesthetically, it is admittedly a bit odd to take another team's uniform (although in this case, the Patriots' uniforms were actually designed by Adidas, so they likely already had the design on hand) and literally just re-color it. Additionally, there's a reason my concept was of the throwbacks; the Patriots' current road uniforms are some of the worst in the NFL. The unnecessary piping and side panels don't exactly combine for a great look. Still, it's an unique idea that is going to be interesting for this one game only.
The best part of these uniforms? The silver helmets. As far as I know, these are the first silver helmets in Mississippi State history. They feature a metallic pattern just like the Patriots, which I'm not the biggest fan of, but it is something different. While the jersey and pants obviously (well, hopefully) won't be worn again, the helmet is still a possibility. I could see a silver-white-gray combo showing up for a game later this season.
In fact, I'd argue that just the silver helmets with our regular road uniforms (which we only debuted this past weekend) would have been a better option. It would have clearly mimicked the Patriots without the weird, blatant copying that we ended up with.
The uniforms will be worn in this Saturday's road game vs. UMass at Gillette Stadium. To view more pictures of the uniforms, click here.
