Mississippi State started off their 2017 SEC slate off with a bang on Saturday, completely dominating then #12 LSU for a 37-7 win, the Bulldogs' first over the Tigers since 2014 and first in Starkville since 1999. Much like the Bulldogs' win in Baton Rouge in 2014, the win catapulted the Bulldogs into the rankings (up to #17 in the AP Poll released on Sunday.) The game was also Ed Orgeron's 3rd loss in as many games as an opposing head coach in Starkville; he previously lost the 2005 and 2007 Egg Bowls in Starkville as head coach of Ole Miss. In addition to all of that, the game was one of this weekend's top uniform matchups in the country.
Saturday was the first time that the Bulldogs had worn the gray pants with the updated maroon jerseys; the addition of gray to the shoulder stripes made the maroon over gray combo look even better than it did before. In fact, I would go as far to say it was one of, it not the, best uniform combinations Mississippi State has ever worn on the field. I hope to see it many more times in the future. Combined with LSU's classic Gold-White-Gold combo, it was a tremendous, traditional looking football game. Considering this, the packed out stadium, and the huge win, Saturday night was all around one of the best that Davis Wade Stadium has ever seen.
The jersey model for the LSU win is running back #22 Aeris Williams, who absolutely tore up the LSU defense all night. Williams' best game since last season's Egg Bowl was a huge key to the Bulldogs' statement win.
