College World Series History
Mississippi State has made 11 College World Series appearances in its history, the most successful being the 2013 trip that resulted in a second place finish, and the two most recent being the back-to-back trips in 2018 and 2019. The first trip happened in 1971, with Head Coach Paul Gregory and the original white "State" pins. The next 5 appearances came with Head Coach Ron Polk, whose teams wore the Maroon 85, White 85, White MS, Gray Script, and Maroon "State" uniforms. The 98 appereance came under Pat McMahon with the Maroon "Bulldogs" and White MS Pinstripes uniforms. Polk got another trip with some awful Russell Athletic uniforms in 2007. In the 2013 Title Series run under John Cohen, Maroon MS, Maroon 85, and White MS Pinstripe uniforms were worn. With interm HC Gary Henderson in 2018, the Bulldogs wore black in Omaha for the first time ever; White Pins, Gray Pins, and Maroon 85s were also worn that year. Under Chris Lemonis in 2019, State wore three variants of the "85" design in Omaha: all-black, white, and maroon (paired with gray pants). In 2021, as Mississippi State won its first National Championship, the Bulldogs wore the Maroon 85s, White 85s, and Gray Script "State" uniforms, with the Maroon 85s being worn as State clinched its first ever CWS title. 2021
For the first time in school history, Mississippi State won a National Championship in 2021, as the Bulldogs made their 12th College World Series appearance and finally finished the job, bringing the hardware back home to Starkville. After the 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mississippi State was one of the nation's top teams when college baseball returned. As a top-8 national seed for the second consecutive postseason, they swept through a home regional to advance to a 5th consecutive Super Regional, which they won over Notre Dame to advance to a 3rd consecutive College World Series appearance. After advancing to the National Championship Series for the second time in program history, the Bulldogs defeated Vanderbilt to claim the CWS title for the first time ever. The Bulldogs primarily wore three different uniforms throughout the 2021 postseason: the maroon 85s, white 85s, and gray script "state' jerseys. A fourth uniform was worn a single time: the all-black look that was so successful in 2019. After a 9-1 loss to Notre Dame that set up a deciding game 3 of the Super Regional, that look did not return for the remainder of the postseason. The maroon 85s were the look worn as the Bulldogs clinched their first ever National Championship. 2021 NCAA Tournament Uniform Records White 85: 4-0 Record, Championship Series Berth Maroon 85 over White: 4-1 Record, Super Regional Championship, National Championship Gray Script "State": 2-1 Record, Regional Championship Black 85 over Black: 0-1 Record Mississippi State earned the 3 seed in the 2021 SEC Tournament along with a first round bye. The Bulldogs did not take advantage of the opportunity, instead turning in a pair of run-rule losses and exiting Hoover as swiftly as they could. 2021 SEC Tournament Uniform Records White 85: 0-1 Record Gray Script "State": 0-1 Record |
2019
Under the guidance of Chris Lemonis, the Bulldogs' fourth HC in four years, Mississippi State made its fourth consecutive Super Regional and second consecutive College World Series in 2019. In the final season of Bulldog legends Jake Mangum, Elijah MacNamee, Ethan Small, and Cole Gordon, State was a national seed and hosted all the way to Omaha, sweeping through a home regional and home Super Regional. The Bulldogs wore four different jerseys (white STATE, white 85s, maroon 85s, "Nickelblack" black 85s) and five total uniform combinations throughout their 2019 postseason run. 2019 NCAA Tournament Uniform Records Black 85 over Black: 3-0 Record, Regional Championship, Super Regional Championship Maroon 85 over White: 2-0 Record 50-style White STATE: 1-0 Record White 85: 0-1 Record Maroon 85 over Gray: 0-1 Record After earning a first round bye in the SEC Tournament, Mississippi State defeated LSU in a 17-inning marathon; they would lose their next two games to exit the tournament. 2018 SEC Tournament Uniform Records White 85: 1-1 Record Maroon 85 over Gray: 0-1 Record |
2018
Mississippi State won two games in its 10th trip to Omaha after one of the worst starts to a season imaginable and one of the most impressive turnarounds in college baseball history. The Bulldogs wore four uniforms throughout the run: White and Gray Pins and Maroon and Black 85s. 2018 was the first time that the Bulldogs had ever worn black in the NCAA Tournament. 2018 NCAA Tournament Uniform Records White "State" Pinstripes: 2-0 Record Gray Pinstripes: 3-1 Record, Regional Championship Black 85 over Black: 2-1 Record, Super Regional Championship Maroon 85 over White: 1-2 Record State made the SEC Tournament as the 9 seed but lost in the play-in round to LSU. 2018 SEC Tournament Uniform Records Maroon 85 over White Pins: 0-1 Record |
2017
In Andy Cannizaro's only full season as head coach, the Bulldogs posted a 17-13 SEC record, 40 wins on the season, and a super regional appearance after winning the 2017 Hattiesburg Regional, all despite losing 10 players to the 2016 MLB draft as well as numerous pitchers to injury. 2017 NCAA Tournament Uniform Records Inverted White 85s: 3-1 Record, Regional Championship Maroon MS over White: 1-2 Record State wore Maroon MS over White in all four of its games in the 2017 SEC Tournament. 2017 SEC Tournament Uniform Records Maroon MS over White: 2-2 Record |
2016
In 2016, the Bulldogs won the SEC Regular Season Championship for the first time since 1989, were a national seed for the first time ever, and hosted a super regional for the second time ever. After winning their home regional, however, the Bulldogs were swept by a red-hot Arizona team in the super regional. 2016 NCAA Tournament Uniform Records Inverted White 85s: 1-0 Record, Regional Championship Maroon MS: 1-1 Record Gray Pinstripes: 1-1 Record As the 1 seed in the SEC Tournament, State wore the White MS jerseys in their opening game and the Maroon MS jerseys in their final two. 2016 SEC Tournament Uniform Records White MS: 1-0 Record Maroon MS: 0-2 Record |
2014
In 2014, the Bulldogs posted an impressive 18-12 SEC Record, the best at that point under John Cohen, but a lackluster non conference record forced them to travel in regionals as a #2 seed. In the Lafayette Regional, the Bulldogs won their first two games, but their lack of offense caught up to them in two consecutive losses to Louisiana to end their season in regionals. 2014 NCAA Tournament Uniform Records Maroon MS over Gray: 1-0 Record Maroon MS over Pinstripes: 1-1 Record Maroon 85 over White: 0-1 Record In the 2014 SEC Tournament, the Bulldogs wore the two worst uniforms of the Adidas Era, in addition to the always solid Maroon 85 and Cream MS jerseys. 2014 SEC Tournament Uniform Records Maroon 85 over Gray: 1-0 Record White "Hail State": 1-0 Record Cream MS: 0-1 Record Lead "Hail State": 0-1 Record |
2013
2013 was a historic season for Mississippi State Baseball. After a stellar non-conference season and a 16-14 record in SEC play, the Bulldogs qualified as a regional host, for the first time under John Cohen. They won their regional, and traveled to Charlottesville, Virginia to play in a super regional. After sweeping the Cavaliers, the Bulldogs advanced to Omaha for the first time since 2007. In Omaha, the Bulldogs defeated Oregon State, Indiana, and Oregon State again to advance to the National Championship Series for the first time in program history. Ultimately, the Bulldogs fell twice to UCLA in the Championship Series, finishing the historic season as second in the nation. 2013 NCAA Tournament Uniform Records Maroon MS/White: 3-0 Record, Super Regional Championship Maroon 85/Pinstripes: 1-0 Record Maroon MS/Gray: 1-0 Record White MS Pinstripes: 2-1 Record, Regional Championship, Championship Series Berth Maroon 85/Gray: 1-1 Record Maroon 85/White: 0-1 Record State wore the Maroon MS jerseys, along with both White and Maroon 85 jerseys, in the 2013 SEC Tournament. 2013 SEC Tournament Uniform Records Maroon 85 over Gray: 2-0 Record White 85: 1-0 Record Maroon MS over Pinstripes: 0-1 Record |
2012
After a fun SEC Tournament run that led to the 7th seeded Bulldogs' first SEC Tournament title since 2005, the 2012 Bulldogs team ran out of gas in the Tallahassee Regional, getting beat twice by Samford and picking up a win over UAB in between. 2012 NCAA Tournament Uniform Records Maroon MS over Gray: 1-0 Record Maroon 85 over White: 0-2 Record In their 2012 SEC Tournament championship run, the Bulldogs wore Maroon MS over Gray in the first two games, White 85s in the lone loss of the tournament, and Maroon 85 over White in the final three wins. 2013 SEC Tournament Uniform Records Maroon 85 over White: 3-0 Record, SECT Championship Maroon MS over Gray: 2-0 Record White 85: 0-1 Record |
2011
The 2011 squad was the first of John Cohen's to make the NCAA Tournament. They traveled to Georgia Tech for regionals as a 3 seed, and proceeded to defeat all 3 of the other teams participating in the regional in order to advance to a super regional in Gainesville. After a lopsided loss in game 1, the Bulldogs won game 2 on a legendary walk-off home run by Nick Vickerson. The Bulldogs led late in game 3, but eventually their season ended just short of Omaha. 2011 NCAA Tournament Uniform Records Maroon MS/White: 2-0 Record, Regional Championship Maroon 85/White: 1-1 Record Maroon MS/Gray: 1-1 Record In their first SEC Tournament appearance since 2007, the Bulldogs wore the Maroon MS and Black MS jerseys. This was the first and, as of 2018, only time that the Bulldogs have worn black in a postseason baseball game. 2011 SEC Tournament Uniform Records Maroon MS over Gray: 0-1 Record Black MS over White: 0-1 Record |
2007
The only team to go to Omaha between 1998 and 2013, the 2007 team had Bulldog legends like Jeffrey Rea, Mitch Moreland, Ed Easley, and more. Thanks to Russell Athletic, they also had the worst uniforms in Mississippi State baseball history (along with the 2014 SEC Tournament uniforms). Despite having some actually good gray script uniforms, they wore the worst white and maroon jerseys in school history throughout the postseason. Great team, but embarassingly bad uniforms. Makes me very appreciative for what we have now. 2007 NCAA Tournament Uniform Records White Block "State": 3-1 Record, Regional Championship Maroon Cursive "State" over Gray: 2-1 Record, Super Regional Championship State wore the same two uniforms in their two losses in the 2007 SEC Tournament 2007 SEC Tournament Uniform Records White Block "State": 0-1 Record Maroon Cursive "State" over Gray: 0-1 Record |
2006
State did not make the SEC Tournament in 2006, but nonetheless snuck into the Clemson Regional as a 3 seed. The second year with Russell Athletic saw three uniforms worn in the postseason- the white "State" uniform, the maroon "Bulldogs" jersey with white pants, and the maroon script "State" jersey with gray pants. None of them were good, but the white jerseys were far, far better than what was worn the next year during the Omaha run. 2006 NCAA Tournament Uniform Records White Slanted "State": 1-0 Record Maroon "Bulldogs" over White: 1-1 Record Maroon Cursive "State" over Gray: 0-1 Record |
2005
The switch to Russell Athletic ushered in a dark age of Mississippi State baseball uniforms. Believe it or not, this initial 2005 set, which at the time was easily the worst in program history, was arguably the best State would have until John Cohen took over. 2005 NCAA Tournament Uniform Records Maroon "State" over White: 2-0 Record Maroon "Bulldogs" over White: 0-2 Record State went 4-0 in the 2005 SEC Tournament, claiming the tournament championship for the first time since 2001. 2005 SEC Tournament Uniform Records Maroon "Bulldogs" over White: 2-0 Record, SECT Championship White Slanted "State": 1-0 Record Maroon "State" over Gray: 1-0 Record |
2003
In the first postseason appearance of the second Ron Polk era, State hosted for the first time since 2000 and split time between the White MS uniforms and maroon jerseys over gray pants (wearing the maroon "State" and maroon "Bulldogs" jerseys once each). 2003 NCAA Tournament Uniform Records White MS: 1-1 Record Maroon "Bulldogs" over Gray: 1-0 Record Maroon "State" over Gray: 0-1 Record |
2001
In 2001, Pat McMahon's last year as head coach, the Bulldogs wore two uni combos in their five postseason games: White MS pinstripes and Maroon "State" over Gray Pins. Thanks to former Bulldog Matthew Maniscalco (@MManiscalco7 on Twitter) for confirming pants colors for the Delaware game and the first Fullerton game. 2001 NCAA Tournament Uniform Records White MS Pinstripes: 2-1 Record, Regional Championship Maroon "State" over Gray Pinstripes: 1-1 Record |
2000
Pinstripes were king in 2000. In the Bulldogs' first ever Super Regional game, they wore Gray Pinstripe vests; gray pinstripes would later be worn in game 2 of the 2016 home Super Regional vs Arizona. The four combinations worn in the 2000 postseason would not be matched until 6 were worn in the 2013 run to the national championship series. Thanks to former Bulldog Matthew Maniscalco (@MManiscalco7 on Twitter) for confirming pants colors for the first two Notre Dame games. 2000 NCAA Tournament Uniform Records Maroon "Bulldogs" over Gray Pinstripes: 1-0 Record White MS Pinstripes: 2-1 Record, Regional Championship Gray Pinstripes: 0-1 Record Maroon "State" over White Pinstripes: 0-1 Record |
Reminder: Below this point (beyond 2000), I've only included graphics for College World Series runs. State went to regionals most years 1999 and back, but pictures from those games are very hard to come by.
1998
In Pat McMahon's first season as head coach, the Bulldogs made back-to-back College World Series appearances for the first (and thus-far only) time in program history. State wore the maroon script "Bulldogs" jerseys in the first two games and White MS Pinstripes in the third, marking the first time the Bulldogs had worn pinstripes in Omaha since their first trip in 1971. 1998 CWS Uniform Records Maroon "Bulldogs" over Gray: 1-1 Record White MS Pinstripes: 0-1 Record |
1985
The "Thunder and Lightning" year, subject of an SEC Storied, was the year that many say we should've won it all, and the reason that we call the maroon and white pullovers with "Mississippi State" in a western font on the front the Maroon and White "85s." In the 4 games at the World Series, the Bulldogs wore the White 85s in three games and the Maroon 85s with gray pants in the other. 1985 CWS Uniform Records Maroon 85 over Gray: 1-0 Record White 85: 1-2 Record |
Note: In 1979 and 1981, it is virtually impossible to tell if gray or white pants were worn in a given game. I just assumed gray pants for "away" games and white pants for "home games"- so it very well could be slightly inaccurate.
1971
The Bulldogs made their first ever trip to Omaha in 1971 under Head Coach Paul Gregory. The white "State" pinstripes were the Bulldogs' uniforms at that time and had been since 1966. The M over S logo had been worn on the hats since 1968; the same hat design with the M over S logo has been worn in all 32 of the Bulldogs' College World Series games (31 times in maroon, once in black.) 1971 CWS Uniform Records White "State" Pinstripes: 0-2 Record |
