Mississippi State's final non-conference game of 2018 was pretty similar to its first three in that State scored a bunch of points while the opponent did not. After starting the season 3-0 against Stephen F. Austin, Kansas State, and Louisiana, Mississippi State has only been 2-3 in SEC Play. Before finishing the season with Alabama, Arkansas, and Ole Miss, the Bulldogs completed their dominance over non-conference foes by defeating Louisiana Tech 45-3.
For the third homecoming game in a row, Mississippi State wore the classic Maroon-Maroon-White color combo. The difference this year was that, as has been the case for every home game this year except for the season opener, matte helmets were worn instead of the "normal" shiny helmets. It was the third time this season that the Matte-Maroon-White combo had been worn; no other combination has been worn more than once.
Last night was the fifth consecutive game in which Mississippi State had worn maroon jerseys; such a streak has happened only two other times since 1980: from Game 2 to Game 6 of 2008 and from the 2003 Egg Bowl to Game 4 of 2004. All three occurrences involved a road game at LSU in which the Bulldogs were forced to wear maroon jerseys.
This season, the maroon jerseys have been worn in 5 different combinations; that's the most combinations involving the same maroon jersey in school history. 3 of those combinations have involved white pants. As mentioned earlier, Matte-Maroon-White has been worn 3 times; the maroon jerseys and white pants were also worn with shiny maroon helmets against SFA and with white helmets at LSU. The two other combinations involving maroon jerseys were Matte-Maroon-Gray and Matte-Maroon-Maroon.
Lousiana Tech wore white helmets, white jerseys, and red pants in the matchup. It was the third consecutive time that LA Tech had worn white helmets against Mississippi State; I wouldn't have minded seeing the red helmets this year. Still, LA Tech looked pretty good; like Louisiana, they have some of the best Group of 5 uniform sets.
I always enjoy it when the uniform matchups are opposite light/dark combos, as was the case last night with State in Dark/Dark/Light (M/M/W) and LA Tech in Light/Light/Dark (W/W/R). This was actually the third consecutive Mississippi State vs LA Tech game in which this has been the case; last year was M/W/W vs W/Blue/Blue and 2015 was M/M/M vs W/W/W.
The win over LA Tech was Mississippi State's third straight in matte helmets, improving the current matte helmets’ record to 4-2 and State's all time record in matte helmets to 14-12.

The uniform model for this week is QB #7 Nick Fitzgerald, who completed 17/28 passes for 243 yards and 4 TDs, while also running for 107 yards. Always great to see another stellar performance from the Bulldogs' fifth year senior QB.
Next week, State will travel to Tuscaloosa to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide. While taking on the nation's #1 team, State will wear their white jerseys for the first time since September 22nd against Kentucky. Looking forward to seeing what combo we go with. Hail State!
