Two things we've learned over the last two weeks: Bo Pelini is the worst defensive coordinator in the country and Zach Arnett is one of the best. After breaking the SEC single-game passing record two weeks ago against LSU, Mike Leach's Air Raid offense has sputtered to an unexpected halt, failing to score a single point against a Kentucky defense who had just given up 42 points to Ole Miss a week prior. Befuddlement is an understatement.
Mississippi State wore its second uniform combination of the season at Kentucky, sticking with the gloss-finish, shiny maroon helmets and white pants from the first two games, but swapping in the road white jerseys. It marked the first time that the Bulldogs' most traditional road combination, Maroon/White/White had been worn since the Outback Bowl at the end of the 2018 season. Even further, it was the first time that it had been worn with the traditional gloss-finish maroon helmets since the 2017 win at Texas A&M, which was nearly three years ago.
It was the first time that white jerseys had been worn with the current maroon helmet design, which features a maroon "M" outlined in white and a white facemask. Even though I do love the matte maroon helmets on the road (especially when paired with white accents rather than silver), I thought this was a fantastic look, and one that the gloss-finished helmets worked really well with. Even though the results on the field have been a roller-coaster, State's uniforms have consistently looked fantastic this year, and I hope that's something we can keep up for the rest of this season and for years to come.
Kentucky went monochrome against Mississippi State for the third consecutive year; after doing all-blue in 2018 and all-white in 2019, the Wildcats stuck with what worked in Lexington two years ago, wearing the exact same all-blue combination as they once again pulled out the W. While it was probably the third best uniform matchup that the Bulldogs have participated in this year, it was still a really solid one; I'm a fan of Kentucky's solid blue look, and it created a nice contrast with State's white jerseys and pants. The Blue/Blue/Blue vs Maroon/White/White matchup was a repeat of the 2009 color matchup; that game was a 31-24 win for the Bulldogs that would be the start of a 7-game winning streak over the Wildcats (what a time...)
This year's game marked a return to form the the Bulldogs' uniform combinations in Lexington, after wearing White/White/White in 2016 and MatteMaroon/White/Gray in 2018. Each of State's last four wins at Kentucky have come in Maroon/White/White, with the last three (11, 12, and 14) coming in MatteMaroon/White/White. Despite the loss today, the MatteMaroon/White/White streak is still alive; maybe we'll see that look return to Lexington in 2022?

Next weekend, Mississippi State will return back home to Starkville to take on Texas A&M, who is coming off a big upset win over Florida. Though it's possible that they stick with the classic Maroon/Maroon/White, I expect the Bulldogs to switch things up with the uniforms this week, pairing up some different helmet and/or pants options with the maroon jerseys.
In my preseason predictions (which are now 2-1), I had State going with Maroon/Maroon/Gray against A&M, and I still think that's most likely. If that does end up being the case, the big question is if they stick with the gloss-finished maroon helmets or break out the matte maroon helmets for the first time in 2020. I feel like they might would go with the matte lids, especially if they still have the silver accents to match the gray pants. However, I would stick with the glossier lids, as those just look so much better with the maroon jerseys; even though they don't have any gray or silver to "match" the gray pants, I still think the look works better that way, as evidenced in 2017.
