A new era of Mississippi State Basketball is upon us. A renovation is underway at the Humphrey Coliseum, and both the Men's and Women's programs will have new head coaches for the 2022-2023 season. That means it's time to rethink everything, including uniforms.
Since the 2009-2010 season, Mississippi State's women's basketball program has worn uniforms primarily featuring the "banner" wordmark logo. This logo was worn during the program's greatest heights, including the two national championship game appearances in 2017 and 2018. However, over the last couple seasons, the Bulldogs have also mixed in some alternate looks, including a "State" script, a "Bulldogs" script, and even a "Starkvegas" jersey. I think these ideas are all a step in the right direction, and fully embracing them- along with other historical ideas- could really give the Mississippi State Women's Basketball program a fresh sense of identity under new Head Coach Sam Purcell.

Primary Uniforms Mississippi State's rich history in Women's Basketball spans decades, with legends such as LaToya Thomas, Tan White, and Sharon Thompson setting the stage for the program's future success. Each of those legendary players wore uniforms with a classic "split" design featuring "Mississippi" over the player number and "State" below the player number, all in block lettering. This classic design lends itself perfectly to the modern era, and could be implemented seamlessly with Mississippi State's custom block font. This concept brings back this style for the primary white, maroon, and black uniforms. The uniforms also feature the classic double-stripe striping pattern currently employed by the Bulldogs' National Championship winning baseball program on the collar, sleeves, and shorts. The shorts feature a Bulldog silhouette on the belt buckle and "M-State" logo on the sides. Altogether, this is a classic, clean look that would leave the Bulldogs looking great as they move forward into the Sam Purcell era. |
"Bulldogs" Script Uniforms In 2021, Mississippi State was slated to wear gray "Reverse Retro" uniforms featuring a "Bulldogs" script based on a "Lady Bulldogs" script that was worn from the 1983-84 to 1985-86 seasons. Those "Reverse Retro" uniforms never actually saw the court, as the game in which they were slated to worn was canceled due to an ice storm hitting Starkville, which was disappointing, as they were really well done. In this concept, I'm bringing that idea back as a permanent gray alternate, featuring the same striping and shorts designs as the primary uniforms with the "Bulldogs" script from the un-worn "Reverse Retro" uniforms. I really like this look- the light gray base really showcases the Bulldogs' iconic colors by allowing the maroon and white accents to shine. |
"State" Script Uniforms During the 2020-2021 season, Mississippi State wore both maroon and black uniforms with the "State" script that the Men's team wore in the late '70s. This script is perfect for Women's Basketball, and in this concept I'm applying it to two new color ways. First, a cream uniform featuring simple maroon accents in the same style as the popular Men's cream alternates that were worn from 2016 to 2020, but with the "State" script. Second, an updated version of the annual "Think Pink" uniform. The "State" script feels perfect for the pink jersey, which with adequate white and maroon accents, really feels at home as a part of this set. |
That's all I've got! With these six uniforms, I believe Mississippi State would have one of the best Women's Basketball uniform sets in the country as the Sam Purcell era begins. Hail State!
