Thanks to two blocked kicks- one PAT and one potentinal game-winning FG, Mississippi State managed to win the 2016 St. Petersburg Bowl despite a rather sloppy performance. The win gave the Bulldogs their sixth win in a season that contained some extreme highs- beating Texas A&M and Ole Miss- and lows- losing to South Alabama and Kentucky.
They did so in monochrome maroon uniforms- the same combo they wore in a loss to Auburn earlier this season. This was the third repeat combo of the season; Maroon/Maroon/White and All White were the other two. Like in the Auburn game, the all Maroon look really didn't look too great with mismatching stripes on the pants and jersey. I'm hoping that the maroon jerseys will be updated next season to correct this issue. The drab-ness of Tropicana Field combined with the all-maroon to create a rather dark look, but the bright red of Miami's helmets and pants brightened up the game.
By wearing another repeat combo, the Bulldogs remained at 10 combinations on the season, finishing in a tie with the 2015 season for the most in program history.
The jersey model for this game is the 2016 St. Petersburg Bowl MVP, Quarterback #7 Nick Fitzgerald, who will also be the primary jersey model for the 2017 Season, taking over for #8 Fred Ross.
