The 2017 season got off to a great start Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs rolled over FCS opponent Charleston Southern in a 49-0 rout. In its first game under new Defensive Coordinator Todd Grantham, the Bulldog defense held CSU to no first downs in the first quarter, no points the entire game, and 33 net offensive yards the entire game; the Buccaneers never ran a single play from Bulldog territory the entire game.
More importantly, the game was the debut of the Bulldogs' updated maroon jerseys, details on which can be found here. The new jerseys looked great in person; the gray on the sleeve stripes is darker than it appears in photos and contrasts well with the white stripes. The black outlines that are inexplicably still on the numbers are hardly noticeable; they shouldn't be there but they don't significantly detract from the overall look. Combined with the maroon helmets and white pants (which feature matching stripes), this was the best home look that Mississippi State football has had in a long, long time. Finally, most all of the kinks have been worked out.
It was the ninth straight home opener (every one under Mullen) that the Bulldogs have worn maroon helmets, maroon jerseys, and white pants. And as I said above, this is the best it's looked. The next home game is on September 16 against LSU; I wouldn't mind seeing the gray pants paired with the maroon helmets and jerseys for that game. With gray now included in the stripes on the jersey, I think that combination, which was already one of the Bulldogs' best, will look even more amazing.
The jersey model for this game is QB #7 Nick Fitzgerald; Fitz stared his 2017 season by passing 16 for 29 with 239 yards, 2 TD, and 0 INT. He also ran the ball 7 times, netting 41 yards and rushing for 1 TD.
