After three weeks on the road to start the season, Mississippi State's baseball team finally returned home this week to take on New Mexico State and Utah Valley in a halfway-completed Dudy Noble Field.
In Tuesday Night's "New Dude" soft opening, the Bulldogs wore the classic white "State" pinstripes for the first time this season; State picked up a 9-1 win in the stadium's debut. Wednesday night, however, was far from a classic look. The Bulldogs wore the black 85 pullover jerseys, which were first worn a couple of Sundays ago at Texas A&M Corpus Christi, pairing them with black hats and solid black pants with a thin white stripe.
Opinons on the all-black look were mixed, with a majority leaning on the "dislike" side. The look didn't feature a single drop of maroon, which made the look "cleaner" but not very "Mississippi State." My biggest problem was with the black pants; I can live with the black 85 jerseys and even black hats, especially on a Wednesday non-conference game in March, but I can't get behind black pants in baseball. It just looks too softball-ish, or as one person put it, "Football Referee Pants." The only exception is the old-school Pittsburgh Pirates look, which features a gold jersey to break up the solid black look. Go with white pants, and this is a solid midweek alternate.

I do have to say that I like this all-black look much better than the one worn in 2015; the numbers/wordmark not being inverted, the pants only have a single stripe, and the hat being solid black all contribute to a cleaner and more solid look. Even though I hate the look in theory, I did think that it looked sharp under the lights on Wednesday night. Of course, it would be more suited for a softball team whose colors and black and white; white pants would make it a sharp baseball look for team with a black and white color scheme.
The black hat is the first that the Bulldogs have worn since 2016; it is actually the first alternate hat in general for Mississippi State baseball since 2016. The Bulldogs wore the same classic maroon hat for every single game in the 2017 season. The black pants were the first since the aforementioned 2015 look.
On Friday, the Bulldogs played a doubleheader against Utah Valley to avoid Saturday's forecasted rain. The doubleheader was split, with State losing game 1 in extra innings in the maroon 85 tops and white pants. For game 2, the Bulldogs switched to the white 85 tops for a 4-2 win. In the series finale on Sunday, the Bulldogs picked up a 5-3 series-clinching win while in the white "State" pinstripes, the same classic look that they started the week in on Tuesday.
