In the final week of the Bulldogs' 3-week road trip to open the 2018 season, Mississippi State fell in a midweek game to McNeese State but rebounded by going 3-0 in the Shriners College Classic at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
The week actually started on Monday night, when the Bulldogs wore gray pinstripes at UT Rio Grande Valley. Due to heavy fog, the game was called in the 4th inning with the Bulldogs leading 4-0. Because the game did not go 5 innings, it does not count as an official game; essentially, the game officially never happened. It will, however, serve as an interesting footnote to the Bulldogs' 2018 season; the way that the Gray Pins blended in with the fog created a pretty cool Snow Bowl like effect on the live stream.
In the gray pins again on Wednesday, the Bulldogs traveled to McNeese State and laid an egg, falling to the Cowboys 3-6. However, everything was up from there; on Friday through Sunday, the Bulldogs were one of two teams (Kentucky being the other) to go undefeated in the Shriners College Classic at the home of the 2017 World Series Champion Houston Astros.
As they have on every Friday night this season, the Bulldogs went with the maroon 85 jerseys and white pants for their 3-1 win over the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns. On Saturday, State was ironically the "home" team against the hometown Houston Cougars, and as a result wore the white 85s in the late Saturday night contest. The Bulldogs would win that game 3-2 in 12 innings at around 1 a.m. on Sunday morning.
The Bulldogs' road trip concluded with a Sunday afternoon win over Sam Houston State in which the Bulldogs wore the gray pins for the third time in the span of a week. The black 85s did not see the field this week; the Bulldogs went with their three best and most classic looks in the Shriners Classic and I wouldn't have it any other way.
