What a night Thanksgiving of 2018 was. In Joe Moorhead's first "Battle for the Golden Egg" as head coach of the Bulldogs, Mississippi State let out all of its frustrations about last year's Thanksgiving by absolutely dominating Ole Miss in Oxford. State took an early lead and didn't look back, leading 21-0 at halftime and cruising to a 35-3 win.
The Bulldogs debuted a never-before worn uniform combination in the 2018 Battle for the Golden Egg: white helmets, white jerseys, gray pants. Mississippi State had never even worn this color combination before; any time gray or silver pants had been worn with white jerseys in the past, maroon helmets had accompanied the look. Going into the game, I was really interested to see what the combo would look like in action, and I was not disappointed; I thought that White-White-Gray was an excellent look on the field for Mississippi State.
I've said since it was worn at Arkansas in 2015 that Matte-White-Gray was my favorite color combination for Mississippi State, and that still stands, but W-W-G was a great way to keep that white over gray look while adding a little twist to it. The white helmets were a great call back to the 2016 Battle for the Golden Egg, in which, very similarly to this year, a Nick Fitzgerald-led Bulldog team went up to Oxford and completely dominated. The gray pants went really well with the white helmets and jersey thanks to the gray outline on the helmet logo and gray stripes on the jersey sleeve and collar; the combination both looked great and differentiated the 2018 and 2016 games while keeping the same feel. Win-win all the way around.
Ole Miss went with navy helmets, red jerseys, and gray pants for the fourth straight Oxford Egg Bowl (2012, 2014, 2016, 2018), after wearing navy jerseys in six straight Oxford Egg Bowls from 2000 to 2010. It was the fourth straight Egg Bowl (second straight in Oxford) in which Mississippi State didn't wear gold-accented alternate uniforms, after doing so for four years in a row from 2011 to 2014. Interestingly, while wearing the gold-accented alternates, Mississippi State was 2-0 at home and 0-2 on the road. Since switching away from the gold accents, the Bulldogs have lost both games in Starkville but won both games in Oxford. So, if we ever were to bring back the gold accented alternates, the rule is pretty clear: wear them at home, but not on the road.

After previously wearing silver pants in the 1986 and 1988 Egg Bowls, Mississippi State has now worn gray pants in two consecutive matchups against Ole Miss; 2018 was actually State's first ever Egg Bowl win in gray pants. It was also State's first ever Egg Bowl win in white helmets, white jerseys, and non-white pants, after wearing White-White-Maroon in losses in 2006 and 2008.
In addition to this being the first time Mississippi State had ever worn gray pants with white helmets, this was actually the first time State had even worn alternate white helmets with anything other than gray pants. From 2006 to 2008, maroon pants were worn frequently when white helmets were the primaries, but the current white helmets had previously only been worn with white pants.

The uniform model for the 2018 Battle for the Golden Egg is Nick Fitzgerald, who passed for 11/18 and a touchdown, ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, and is 2-0 in Egg Bowls in which his ankle remains in-tact for the entire game. Honorable mentions go to Jonathan Abram, Montez Sweat, and Jeffrey Simmons for being absolute dogs on defense, as well as Braxton Hoyett for saving Matt Corral's life.
Up next for the Bulldogs are the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Outback Bowl, ending a 20-year boycott for a quite a few Bulldog fans. State had famously never been to the Outback Bowl in Tampa; now it's time to cross it off the list. The SEC team is the away team in this year's Outback Bowl, so expect to see the Bulldogs in their white jerseys in a bowl game for the first time since the 2014 Orange Bowl. If you can, make plans to see the Bulldogs in Tampa on New Year's Day 2019! Hail State!
