After losing its first series of the year against LSU last weekend, Mississippi State bounced back this weekend by taking 2 of 3 on the road against a very solid Tennessee team.
The week started with a midweek matchup with Louisiana Monroe, in which the Bulldogs took out their frustrations on the Warhawks by scoring 7 runs in the first inning before a single out was recorded and cruised to a 21-8 victory. The Bulldogs wore the white 85s in the midweek win over ULM, bringing the 2019 record in those uniforms to 4-0.
The series at Tennessee was the Bulldogs' second road series of the season; in the opening game of the series on Friday, the maroon 85 jerseys were worn with the solid gray pants for the second time in 2019. After great outings from both teams' starting pitchers, State pulled out an extra innings win and Jake Mangum passed Jeffrey Rea to break Mississippi State's career hits recored. The win improved the maroon 85 over gray combo to a 2-0 record in 2019; it had previously been worn in the Friday win at Florida.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs broke out the gray pinstripes as they looked to take the series. Despite missing JT Ginn, the Mississippi State pitching staff kept the Volunteers in check, allowing only two runs on a freak play. However, the bats were silent and the Bulldogs fell 2-1 as the series was evened up. The loss dropped the gray pins' record to 2-2, making them the first uniform to have a .500 or lower record since the maroon 85 jerseys were 1-1 after the second week of the season.
Because of the game against Nebraska in Frisco getting cancelled and the Sunday game against Florida being bumped up to Saturday, Sunday's game at Tennessee was the Bulldogs' first Sunday road game of 2019. As a result, it was the first time that that all-black uniforms had been worn on the road this season.
As they usually do in all-black, Mississippi State gutted out a 7-5 victory on Sunday, winning the series over the Vols and improving their record to 27-6 (7-5 SEC) on the season. The Bulldogs are now 4-0 in all-black in 2019, with wins vs Southern Miss, vs Maine, vs Auburn, and at Tennessee. Combined with past seasons, Mississippi State is now 13-3 (.813) all-time in all-black.
