With a bye week to prepare for a very bad Tennessee team, Mississippi State once again looked lost and unprepared in an SEC road game. The Bulldogs haven't won an SEC game outside of the state of Mississippi under Joe Moorhead, and that trend continued this past Saturday, as the Bulldogs fell to a Tennessee team that boasts home losses to Georgia State and BYU earlier this season.
For the second time in 2019, Mississippi State went with a repeat uniform combination for their game in Knoxville. The first repeat combo was White/Maroon/White, which was worn in wins over Southern Miss and Kentucky; the second one is now White/White/White, which was first worn in the season opening win in New Orleans.
Coming into the game with Tennessee, Mississippi State was undefeated (3-0) in white helmets this season, and winless (0-2) in the matte maroon helmets. That might've factored into the decision to go with white helmets for the fourth time in six games this season.
The current white helmets, which are in their fifth season after being first introduced in 2015, were worn twice a year in 2015, 2016, and 2017; under Joe Moorhead, they've been worn twice as frequently. In 2018, they were worn 4 times; at the halfway point of the 2019 season, that total has already been matched. If they're worn once more this season, it will be the most white helmets have been worn since they were the only option in 2008.
It was the second consecutive trip to Knoxville in which Mississippi State has worn all-white; they also did so in 2008. Interestingly, that would be the last white v white helmet matchup that Mississippi State would participate in until three weeks ago against Kentucky. Now, two of State's last three games have been white v white helmet games.
Unlike the Kentucky game, which was very white with 5/6 uniform elements (helmet, jersey, pants for both teams) being white, this game only featured 4/6 white uniform elements, thanks to Tennessee breaking out orange pants for the first time 2016. I'm very happy for @CfieldsVFL, who had been leading the charge for the orange pants' return; I'm less happy that their return coincided with a State loss, but silver linings.
The loss broke a 4 game winning streak in white helmets that extended back to last season's Egg Bowl. The current white helmets are now 8-6 (.571), and the Bulldogs are now 10-13 (.435) in alternate white helmets all-time.

Next week, the Bulldogs return home to take on the #2 team in the nation, the surging LSU Tigers. Fans are encouraged to wear white for the "whiteout" game; it's unlikely, but possible, that the team also wears white and forces LSU into purple, as they did in 2007 and 2009.
My guess that we see maroon (matte) helmets, maroon jerseys, and white pants for the first time this year, but that's solely based on the fact that it hasn't been worn yet.
