After three straight SEC series wins, including the most recent one over in-state rival Ole Miss, Mississippi State was in great position heading into its series with SEC East-leading Vanderbilt. As long as the Bulldogs avoided the sweep, they'd be set up to remain in great position heading into the back half of the SEC schedule. They did do enough to achieve that goal, taking the Saturday game to force a rubber match on Sunday, which was won by the hometown Commodores. So while it wasn't the Bulldogs' most successful weekend, it wasn't a complete failure either.
The uniform lineup was the exact same as the one that the Bulldogs wore two weeks ago, a week which also included a home midweek game followed by a road weekend series: cream script "State" on Tuesday, maroon 85 over white on Friday, gray script "State" on Saturday, and the gray M over S pinstripes on Sunday. This time around, it was a good week for the "State" script, as the cream and gray jerseys took home wins while the 85 and M over S designs both suffered losses.
In the midweek game on Tuesday, Mississippi State defeated UAB by a score of 19-7. The cream uniforms improved to 5-3 on the season with the victory; they've now been worn in three consecutive midweek games, which has quickly vaulted their win-loss record from below .500 to solidly above it.
State is 9-0 in midweek games in 2021, with three wins each in three different uniforms: white M over S pinstripes, white 85s, and cream script "State." In three seasons under Chris Lemonis, Mississippi State is now an incredible 27-1 in midweek games, with the one loss coming in the shortened 2020 season.
Friday's loss at the hands of a complete game from Kumar Rocker gave the maroon 85s their third loss of 2021, dropping their record to 7-3 on the season, included 6-3 when paired with white pants. Saturday's 7-4 victory, which handed Jack Leiter his first career loss and evened the series, was yet another victory for the gray script "State" uniforms, which remain unbeaten with a 3-0 record in 2021 and a 4-0 record all-time.
The loss in the rubber match on Sunday was the first for the updated gray pinstripes, which dropped to 1-1 on the season. The loss was both the Bulldogs' first in gray this season as well as the first in pinstripes. As mentioned earlier, the gray script "State" uniforms are 3-0 on the season, and the solid gray pants were also worn in an additional win, against Texas in the season opener. The Bulldogs' white pinstripes are still undefeated at 5-0 on the season- they should return to action this upcoming weekend against Texas A&M.
