As I tweeted yesterday: "Let's retire these bad boys at 1-0."
In what was easily the most fun game of the season, Mississippi State upset #4 Texas A&M yesterday wearing the black alternate jerseys revealed earlier in the week. I was not, and still am not, a fan of the uniforms at all. In the the linked article I dissected what was so bad about them, and what could have been done better. Despite all of the problems, these were by far the most popular alternate uniforms for State in recent memory, among State fans that is.
So while the uniforms weren't great, the game was. Nick Fitzgerald led the offense to 28 first half points, and the Bulldogs held on to upset the fourth ranked Aggies. The win gave the Bulldogs a winning record (3-2) in black jerseys for the first time ever. Black jerseys were worn in 2009 vs Alabama (L), in 2010 at LSU (L), in 2011 vs LA Tech (W), in 2015 vs Kentucky (W), and of course in 2016 vs Texas A&M (W).
A&M wore Maroon-White-Maroon for the first time this season. It was the first time the Aggies had ever not worn alternates in Starkville. The matchup history between A&M and State is actually quite interesting, with the all time record between the two teams split at 5-5. The teams split 4 games in the early 1900s, all of which were played in Texas. The two teams played again in the 2000 Independence Bowl, which State won wearing all white uniforms (with a brand-new white alternate helmet).
The Aggies, of course, joined the SEC in 2012, making the game between the two maroon and white teams a yearly affair. In 2012, the Bulldogs wore white and silver alternates to commemorate the Snow Bowl win; the Aggies won in all-Black, led by Heisman winner Johnny Manziel. 2013 was the first normal uniform matchup between the two teams in the 21st century; the Aggies won in M-M-W while the Bulldogs wore Shiny-W-W. In 2014, the Bulldogs won wearing the DWS 100 alts while the Aggies sported white and silver alternates, eerily similar to those State had lost in two years prior. 2015 was more similar to 2013, with the Aggies winning in M-M-W and the Bulldogs wearing Matte-W-M.
This year continued the trend of differentiating the teams in Starkville with the Bulldogs in Black and the Aggies in regular M-W-M. Something interesting to note about all of this- since both teams have been in the SEC, the team wearing white has lost every time. Teams wearing black or maroon have worn every time. Of course this simply correlates with the home team winning except for 2012, but it's interesting nonetheless.
Next week, the Bulldogs head to #1 Alabama. Uniform options are pretty open- we'll certainly see the white jersey, but helmet and jersey are up in the air. I'd like to see maroon pants, with either the maroon or white helmet. W-W-M would match the uni combo worn in the Bulldogs' last win in Tuscaloosa back in 2006. White or gray pants are also an option; I'm hoping to see gray pants in the Egg Bowl.
