A team stricken with off the field coaching drama vs an extremely hot team ranked #3 in the country. On paper, this was an easy sweep for the team from Oxford. But for the third year in a row, the intra-state series was won by the team from Starkville. After taking game 1 of Saturday's double header and walking off Sunday's 11-inning affair, Mississippi State has now won 9 out of the last 11 baseball games against the Rebels from up north.
The week started with a midweek matchup against Southern, the first home game in two weeks and unfortunately the last midweek game of the season. In the 5-0 win, The Bulldogs wore the maroon MS jerseys for the second time this season, again with white pinstripe pants. While a clean look, the smaller M over S logo and hovering Adidas logo are still a huge downgrade from last season's version. I do like how they've been pairing them with white pinstripe pants to break up the plain-ness a bit; it's perfect for midweek games.
The Friday Night game vs Ole Miss was postponed due to rain; a double header was played on Saturday as a result. In the Maroon 85 jerseys for game 1, the Bulldogs exploded for 13 runs on 14 hits as they rolled to a shocking 13-3 win over the Rebels. State switched to the white 85 tops for game 2 of the DH, as the Rebels evened up the series.
On Sunday, most were expecting to see the White "State" Pinstripes, which have been a staple and would've created this awesome uni matchup that will probably never happen now. Instead, just like they did in game 3 against Ole Miss in 2016, the Bulldogs wore black opposite Ole Miss's powder blues. Unlike 2016, the Bulldogs went full blackout this time: black hats, black 85 jerseys, and black pants (the same combo that was worn vs New Mexico State earlier in the season). The decision to wear all black was not a popular one among fans on social media (check out the 32 replies to this tweet, most of which are solid roasts of the all-black look); I compared the decision to one made by our former head coach.
The Sunday game was by far the most entertaining of the series; multiple lead changes led to extra innings, and the game ended on a walk-off HR by Luke Alexander in the bottom of the 11th. (Although, maybe if we were wearing pinstripes, Coach Henderson would have been inspired to put in Blake Smith at the start of the 9th inning and we would've won in regulation.) Does winning against your arch rival who is #3 in the country on a bright, sunny day make the all-black uniforms look any better? I'd have to say, yeah. But not by much- pinstripes would've looked amazing this afternoon. As I said last time they were worn: color aside, the black uniforms have a solid design. For a softball team whose colors are black and white, it's an amazing look. For State, it's an extremely solid midweek look if you add white pants. Just not a good in an SEC game, especially a rubber match against Ole Miss.
