After years of wearing black and/or silver against one another, the SEC West's two maroon and white teams finally combined for a ton of maroon on the field in their 2018 matchup. The battle of the maroon and white agricultural schools was won, for the third consecutive season, by Mississippi State. Nick Fitzgerald had a huge bounce back game, Stephen Guidry balled out at receiver, and Erroll Thompson wrecked havoc on defense as the Bulldogs defeated the Aggies by a score of 28-13.
At 7 weeks into the season, many (myself included) were starting to wonder if maroon pants were still in Mississippi State's uniform lineup this season. It seemed likely that they would be still be, but with a new head coach, you'd never know if Moorhead just absolutely hates maroon pants or something. Turns out, he doesn't, and we do still have maroon pants. They made their debut Saturday Night against A&M; they were worn with the maroon jerseys and matte maroon helmets to create the Bulldogs' first head-to-toe all-maroon look since the 2016 St. Petersburg Bowl.
I thought that the 2018 version of all-maroon looked a lot better than the 2016 edition. The thinner pants stripes really improved the look, as did the finally matching sleeve stripes and gray facemask on the helmet. I'm still not a huge fan of the stripe on the matte helmets, which look much better without it IMO. However, with both the jerseys and pants having stripes, it didn't look *too* out of place last night. The only other complaint I have about the look is that the "M" in the "M-State" logo on the maroon pants is white, even though it has been maroon in every single other application on State's uniforms this season. That's really a minor nitpick though; overall, this was State's best all-maroon look in a long time.

The uniform matchup history between Mississippi State and Texas A&M has been a turbulent one. After playing 4 times in the early 1900s (and splitting the games 2-2), the two teams faced off in the 2000 Independence Bowl. In a heavy snow, Texas A&M wore all maroon and Mississippi State wore all white, wearing white helmets for the first time since 1972 in what turned out to be a 43-41 overtime win for the Bulldogs.
In 2012, Texas A&M joined the SEC, joining Mississippi State as the second maroon and white SEC West team. In commemoration of what had since been dubbed the "Snow Bowl," Mississippi State wore all-white alternate uniforms; Texas A&M countered with all-black alternates. There was very little maroon on the field as Johnny Manziel ran all over the Bulldogs. The matchup in College Station in 2013 was more traditional, as the Aggies went Maroon/Maroon/White and State went Maroon/White/White.
Back in Starkville in 2014, Mississippi State wore their popular DWS 100 throwbacks, while Texas A&M went with "icy white" alternates that featured very little maroon. Dak Prescott and Richie Brown dominated the Aggies for the Bulldogs' first win in the matchup since the two teams became conference foes. In 2015, the game featured the most maroon it ever had up until that point, with A&M in M/M/W and State in M/W/M; the Aggies won the game at home.
In 2016, Mississippi State wore what was, in my opinion, the worst football uniform in school history, against Texas A&M. I an all-black uniform with a silver flag design on the shoulders and a silver helmet, Mississippi State upset the then-#4 Aggies, who actually did wear a good dose of maroon in Starkville by wearing M/W/M. 2017 was pretty maroon-filled, but not without an alternate design. Texas A&M wore all-maroon alternates that featured a heavy dose of black and silver accents, while Mississippi State wore M/W/W while cruising to their second consecutive win over the Aggies, and first ever in College Station.
Now, in 2018, we saw the most maroon ever in the matchup. As previously mentioned, Mississippi State went all maroon for the matchup, including helmets, jerseys, pants, and even socks for some players. Texas A&M also opted for maroon helmets and pants; their white jersey was the only non-maroon uniform element on the field. All-maroon isn't my favorite combo for Mississippi State football, but it's bearable once a year, and this was the best it's looked in quite a few iterations. I really like that we did it against A&M this year, if for no reason other than to make up for the lack of maroon in the matchup in years past.
With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 3-2 in this year's matte maroon helmets, and 13-12 in matte helmets all time, getting back above .500 in both categories for the first time since before the Kentucky loss. The win also improved the Bulldogs' record (since 1954) to 21-13 in monochrome maroon (jerseys and pants only) and 14-6 in all-maroon (including helmets). Finally, Saturday's win improved the Bulldogs' overall record against Texas A&M to 7-5 (5-3 this century), including the last three in a row. It's been a fun matchup, especially with Nick Fitzgerald at QB.

This week's uniform model is WR #1 Stephen Guidry, who had 3 receptions for 130 yards and 1 TD with a long of 84 yards. That 84 yard reception, which came on a 3rd and 21 on the last play of the third quarter, set up the Bulldogs' third touchdown of the game that put them up by 8 points with less than a quarter to go. On that play, as well as with the touchdown reception, Guidry showed fans what they've been hoping to see from him since he signed with the Bulldogs last December.
Next week is homecoming week for Mississippi State; they'll take on the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs at 6:30 next Saturday night. State has worn Maroon/Maroon/White for the last two homecoming games; looking forward to seeing what they go with this year. Hail State!
