Though they occurred for completely different reasons, the parallels between the 2015 and 2018 Mississippi State baseball seasons continued this week. After picking up their first SEC series win of the season (in Week 4, the same week that the lone 2015 series win came in), the Bulldogs had a chance to pick up a second straight but blew the game along with any momentum the season had going for it. It didn't help that the lead was blown in the all-black uniforms, easily State's worst.
The week started out as a positive note for the Bulldogs, with a midweek win over Alabama State in Montgomery wearing the gray pins. In the Friday Night game wearing the Maroon 85 jerseys with white pants, another great start by Konnor Pilkington was wasted as he was matched up with the #1 pitcher in the country, Casey Mize, who predictably held the Bulldogs' bats in check. On Saturday, the Bulldogs evened up the series in the gray pins, which were worn in both of this weeks wins. Interesting how that works.
On Sunday, based on the premise of "what works when the series is on the line", the Bulldogs wore the black 85 jerseys with black pants and hats. Turns out, black uniforms can't make up for inept bullpen management. Who knew? The loss was actually the Bulldogs' first ever (at least, in the modern era) loss in black pants. They were previously worn in one game in 2015, a win over Western Kentucky, and then in wins earlier this year over New Mexico State and Ole Miss. Now that the pretense of "we win in them" is gone, it will be interesting to see if we continue to wear them on Sundays.
