The Air Raid giveth and the Air Raid taketh away. A week after upsetting the defending National Champion LSU Tigers on the road, Mississippi State came back home and laid an egg, falling 21-14 to the Arkansas Razorbacks, who snapped a 20-game conference losing streak and won their first SEC Game since 2017.
As expected, Mississippi State didn't do anything crazy uniform-wise for its 2020 home opener, sticking with the shiny maroon helmets and Maroon/Maroon/White combination that worked in Baton Rouge a week prior. As the first home game under Head Coach Mike Leach, Saturday's game marked the fifth consecutive time that Mississippi State has worn maroon jerseys and white pants in a new head coach's home opener; in all but one (Sylvester Croom's debut in 2004), maroon helmets were also worn.
This was the first time since the 2017 TaxSlayer Bowl against Louisville and 2018 Season Opener against SFA that Mississippi State has worn Maroon/Maroon/White in back-to-back games, and the first time they'd done so in the same season since 2015, against LSU and Northwestern State. It was the first time that Mississippi State has lost in the classic Maroon/Maroon/White combination since 2016 against South Alabama, snapping a 9-game and 1491-day winning streak.
Arkansas debuted brand new, permanent, and fantastic looking Darren McFadden style road white jerseys in their win. Along with State's classic Maroon/Maroon/White combination, this created an overall superb uniform matchup, the Bulldogs' second in two games this season. This was a return to form for the Mississippi State vs Arkansas matchup, which has seen a good bit of variety in recent years. In the last two games in Starkville, Mississippi State wore silver helmets and gray pants in 2016 and "Statesman" all-gray alternate uniforms in 2018. This marked the first time that the matchup between the Bulldogs and Razorbacks had been the traditional Maroon/Maroon/White vs Red/White/White since 2010.
I just want to take a minute to note, despite the loss, how great Mississippi State's uniforms have looked this season. It was refreshing to be in Davis Wade Stadium and have essentially zero complaints about the uniform. Sure, you could argue that some fundamental changes could be made, possibly resulting in something similar to one of these concepts. But as far as this design goes, we've finally worked out all the kinks and it is a fantastic look. Great job to everyone who helped get things to this point; we looked great in the national spotlight against LSU last week, and from a branding perspective I think we finally have a look that we can build upon for a long time to come!

Next week, Mississippi State hits the road again and travels to Kentucky, who is now 0-2 on the season after suffering an overtime loss to Ole Miss this past Saturday.
As the Bulldogs look to rebound, we should see the white jerseys for the first time in 2020. As far as the exact combination, for the first time this season it's very much up in the air. Whereas Maroon/Maroon/White was pretty obvious for the season opener and home opener, there are a number of different combinations that Mississippi State could break out in any given road game. They could stick with the shiny maroon helmets or break out the white or matte maroon lids; white, maroon, and gray pants should all be on the table. So we'll see what direction they go.
My preseason predictions are 2-0 so far, so I'll ride with those until they're inevitably proven wrong; I had shiny maroon helmets, white jerseys, and maroon pants predicted for Kentucky, so I'll stick with that for now, though as I said it could go a number of ways.
